I am challenging myself to post a photo each day of the year. I am hoping that this challenge will encourage me to keep my eyes open for the wonders around me, document a great year and improve my photography techniques.

11-30-09 Sun Break

11-30-09 Sun Break, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

Forecasters promised us some sunshine today, but it rained and rained and rained just like most other days in November. Got to go home from trainings early enough to still have some light off to the east, you could finally see the sun peaking through as it set. Just after I posted this, my husband came home with some beautiful shots of the sun doing its magic a little further South.

Another cold and rainy day. Went to my garden looking for a little bit of color on this gray day. Even though it is almost December, some of my summer flowers are still hanging on.

11-27-09 San Juans from Mt. Erie

Today we went to Anacortes to check on Erik's dad's boat. While we were in the area, we decided to go up to Mount Erie and enjoy the rare bit of sunshine.

11-26-09 For the Love of Dogs

This is, of course Thanksgiving, a day to be thankful for many things. It might seem unusual, that I chose a dog picture for my picture of the day today. But we lost a dear family member yesterday. Hershey, my sister's family's beloved Springer Spaniel waited until he could be with his two boys who are off at college to say good bye. I know that their Thanksgiving will be bittersweet today as they celebrate the many, many things we all have to be thankful for including our four legged friends.

11-25-09 A Rare Glimpse

11-25-09 A Rare Glimpse, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

This morning I was excited to see a little pink in the sky. It has been nothing but gray for most of the month of November. And the forecast calls for more wind, and rain later today. Drove out in the fields enjoying the colors in the sky and the sun greeting the Olympics to the West. I was very surprised to Mt. Rainier to the South. Mount Rainier is a giant mountain, but it is quite a distance away and usually doesn't show itself this far North. A few swans decided to join my picture as well. The low light means that the photo doesn't do the scene justice, but I feel truly blessed to have started my early morning with such a sight before heading off to work.

I think that this Harry Lauder's Walking Stick is such a fun plant. This plant, with all of its corkscrew branches is much more interesting after the leaves have fallen. I found this in my go to garden, The Discovery Garden, not much blooming or even leafing right now, but there are still lots of interesting things to see.

How do you sell tulips all year long? You create your own climate. Gray, dark and rainy again today, but Washington Bulb is busy in the sunshine, growing tulips to meet our year round desire for these beautiful flowers.

11-22-09 A Light in the Attic

We live in a 100 year old house. I love the treasures that we still find hidden in walls or buried in the garden . This light shines down on shelves lined with newspapers from 1941. Those will have to be my subject for another gray and rainy day when exploring in the attic seems like the perfect way to spend the afternoon.

11-21-09 Snow Geese, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

Decided to see if I could find some swans or geese this morning. Found a field of Snow Geese. They decided to do a little dance just as I pulled over. They swooped around a bit and settled back to eating the goodies in the field.

The end of the week, the end of the day, the end of the season. The beginning of the weekend, the beginning of the evening, the beginning of winter. (a little early)

11-18-09 Out My Office Window

Busy day in the office leading meetings all day. So, this was the best that I could do. This is a shot out one of my office windows. You can't see it, but our house is just across the street from the church in the background.

11-17-09 Between the Storms, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

We have had 2 major wind and rain storms the last 2 nights and there is a promise for another storm in the next few days. The Skagit is swollen and huge trees are floating down the river. Not flooding yet, but it does look close. We had lots of limbs down but many have had big trees fall down. www.flickr.com/photos/roswellsgirl/4112262495/in/photostr... 11-16-09 Coming Home After Dark

Mondays are long days and fall and winter days here are really short. Since I was coming home in the dark and had not yet captured a picture for today, I decided to take a picture of this dark, rainy and windy night. (I did make a bit of a detour for a little more interesting dark.)

11-14-09 Fake Birds of a Feather

I'm sure that this is not the first year that the hunters have planted fake birds in the field to attract the real thing. But this year I am looking at things a little closer than in the past. Notice that the snow level has dropped since my last photo of the foothills. (Real snow, not fake.)

11-12-09 Sign of the Season

11-12-09 Sign of the Season, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

I love living in a place with 4 true seasons. I enjoy celebrating the changing seasons by watching the swans return, the crocuses bloom, and the rivers rise and fall. Much better than watching the changing seasons by seeing what decorations are hung or music is currently streaming at the nearest shopping mall. Nature is much truer to the seasons than consumerism. One sign that the cold weather is on the way is a light dusting of snow on the tops of the nearby hills.

11-11-09 Camera Envy

11-11-09 Camera Envy, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

This morning I went out looking for swans. Trumpeter and Arctic Swans winter here in our valley. I love to see the swans flying over. They look like 747s flying in formation. I did see some swans, but not in any good places to pull over and take photos. I then decided to look for another winter visitor, the Snow Goose. The snow geese are cool because they come in masses to glean the fields turning fields white with birds. They also make lots of noise. So after finding a field of birds, I got out with my wimpy little point and shoot to take some shots. First shot of several Vs of geese coming my way was hampered by the fact that I had forgotten to replace my memory card last night. That problem solved, I tried again. The sun rays coming through the morning clouds and the field white with geese made quite a scene. I shot of few shots and then, the batteries died. Back to the truck for more batteries. Found some, but they were dead. Rubbed the old ones to warm them up and got a few more shots. Batteries dead again. Repeated the process several times, taking a shot or two and then dead again. While I was fighting with my little camera, I was surrounded by real photographers with giant lenses. They must have been getting quite a laugh out of me. I took a few ok shots and do plan to come back again armed with better batteries and possibly our old school Nikon SLR. By the way, I really don't want a lens as big as the one this guy has, and I do love my little point and shoot. Having that with me all the time has proven to mean much better pictures in the moment, than having to lug around and change lenses. But, on days like today or when I see 10 bald eagles in one tree, I do wish for a DSLR with a choice of several lenses.

My wimpy photo shoot.

Our district office is in an old school building. Guessing it is between 80 and 90 years old. One of the quaint things about the building is that the only restrooms are in the basement. 3 stories down from my office. Who needs a gym membership.

11-09-09 More Water

11-09-09 More Water, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

One of those busy to work and home in the dark days. And to add to it, it is raining. A theme that will surely be a constant here for a while. Went to a great Veteran's Day assembly. Took a few shots, but I wasn't happy with them due to the low lighting. On the way out to the car, I saw the beading water on the shiny new car next to mine. Decided to play with that for my photo of the day.

11-07-09 Push The Button Part 2

Earlier, I posted a photo of Roswell pushing the easy button. Haven't taught him how to push this button yet, but he does know that when I push that button, it means wait, don't run out in the street. Classic Northwest Fall day today, wet and windy. Roswell pushed my buttons and convinced me that we needed to go on a walk anyway.

11-5-09 Windy Day

11-5-09 Windy Day, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

Set out to capture a picture of the wind this evening. Sustained winds of of up to 50 mph. The windows in my very old office building moaned all day. Roswell's tarp on his kennel ripped in half. Lots of limbs down. Don't think that this picture quite captures how very gusty it is, but I liked the way you can see the tumultuous sky in the background.

11-4-09 Roses for Mama

11-4-09 Roses for Mama, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

When I was teaching in Ecuador, my mom flew down to see me. She traveled with me and my teacher friends to Quito and Otavalo where we stayed in hostels. We were there for American Thanksgiving and we went to the fanciest hotel in town where I had enjoyed an American Thanksgiving with friends the year before. When we got there and ordered turkey, they said they didn't have any. But they went out to another hotel and found turkey and brought it back so we could eat our traditional Thanksgiving dinner. In the lobby of the Oro Verde Hotel, there was this huge and amazing bouquet of pink roses. Long after that trip, my mom still talks about those pink roses. And pink roses have become one of the many beautiful things that reminds me of my beautiful Mama. Today is her 78th birthday! She called to say that she is enjoying the pretty pink roses I sent to her. This evening, I ran to the grocery store and took this shot of pink roses as a happy birthday picture for my mom. Happy Birthday Mama!

Rushing to beat the setting sun, Roswell and I headed out to the county airport for some much needed fresh air and a walk in the woods. Our airport had a great series of walking trails that run for miles through the forested areas. It is a great place for walking, biking and even geocaching.

11-1-09 Ish

11-1-09 Ish, originally uploaded by roswellsgirl.

We have a lot of rivers around here that end with "ish". Skagit scribe Robert Sund even has a book of poems called "Ish River". "Ish River"-- like breath, like mist rising from a hillside. Duwamish, Snohomish, Stillaguamish, Samish, Skokomish, Skykomish...all the ish rivers. I live in Ish River country between two mountain ranges where many rivers run down to an inland sea. " This is the Samish River, further up stream than the photo from yesterday.
